![]() If you can follow instructions closely, you can do this and save a bunch of money. The somewhat good news when it comes to changing the timing assembly on a 3V is that it really isn’t that difficult of a job, technically speaking. That’s when we parked it and decided it was time to take the plunge. When you hear any of these, don’t ignore them for long-they’ll definitely get worse quickly. And we knew something was going on with the chain guides when the chain’s movement suddenly became more audible one morning. The cam phasers were ticking on both sides. We knew the chain tensioners were failing thanks to a chain rattle upon start up. In the case of our project-burdened by 116,000 miles of SoCal traffic mixed with lots of autocross and track days-we had a few things going on. However, everything else timing related-including the infamous chain tensioners-requires significantly more time to resolve. The cam phasers can go out (usually a ticking sound gives this away), which isn’t a terribly hard swap since it can be accomplished by just pulling the valve covers. The most dreaded ones revolve around the timing assembly. On the downside, it also introduced more complexity into the system while falling well short of the benefits that a DOHC 4V design would have provided.įor the most part, though, 3Vs are tough and reliable engines (provided that you keep the power under around 450 to the wheels), but there are a few issues that are going to pop up eventually. On the upside, they sound great and the extra valve and variable cam timing provided by the phasers on the camshafts provided more usable torque and horsepower in a street friendly range then the 2V it replaced. “The cam phasers allow the valve timing to be adjusted on the fly by using engine oil pressure to hydraulically rotate the input side of the cam phaser against the output side,” suggests Integrity Auto Works.Ford’s 4.6 3V, typically just referred to as a “3V” in the Mustang community, is a bit of an oddball in the modular engine family and definitely has its pros and cons. On the other hand, if more power is needed, the cam phaser will move the camshaft affecting the position of the cam lobes and, of course, the speed and timing of the valve opening. At lower RPMs, for example, it is optimal to save as much fuel as possible so the cam will be in one position. In short, cam phasers will move the camshaft a few degrees to one side or the other, thus affecting the cam lobes’ ability to open and close valves. This technology is created to provide certain advantages which benefit both fuel efficiency and maximum HP values. Use specialized tools optimized to remove plugs from the engine.Įngines with Variable Valve Timing (VVT) have numerous additional pieces which make possible slight timing adjustments to valve opening and closing operations on a running engine. ![]() Do not use air or power tools to remove plugs, use hand tools only,.Do not try to remove the plugs from a warm or hot engine,.Thus, a full engine inspection should be performed. This can lead to premature camshaft lobe wear, more stress on the cam phasers and, in the worst case, physical contact between pistons valves and other metal pieces. ![]() If some of the most important supporting pieces of the timing chain have been damaged, we should infer that the ignition and camshafts timing isn’t in accordance with the factory setting. Plastic pieces, on the other hand, can fall to the oil pan and partially block the oil’s path. No reason to tell you that this can damage the timing chain further. ![]() These plastic pieces can become fully detached from metal surfaces over time thus enabling metal-to-metal contact of the timing chain and metal carriers guides were attached to. The loosened timing chain will rattle like mad and damage plastic timing chain guides. In this case, the domino effect is more than likely. If you can hear rattles, the timing chain may have become loose due to the blown out tensioner. So, listen carefully for any unusual rattles after a cold start. Timing chain rattles are most noticeable at the very start. ![]()
